International Biodiversity Day celebrations 2024 in Kapchorwa district, Uganda

Theme: “Biodiversity Restoration for Climate Resilience”

The International Biodiversity Day 2024 celebrations held in Kapchorwa District were a hallmark event focused on biodiversity restoration for climate resilience. Under the theme “Biodiversity Restoration for Climate Resilience,” the event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including NEMA (National Environment Management Authority), UNDP, Youth Go Green, Uganda Land Owners Association, Caritas Uganda, and other community-based organizations. The event highlighted the critical importance of preserving biodiversity to address climate challenges, protect ecosystems, and enhance community resilience.

Activities Undertaken

1. Tree Planting for Reforestation

  • Participants planted 1,000 indigenous and fruit tree seedlings along riverbanks, in schools, and around community institutions.
  • Bamboo, a critical resource for preventing soil erosion and enhancing water conservation, was planted along degraded riverbanks.
  • Trees were also introduced in agroforestry systems to support sustainable agricultural practices, improve soil health, and promote economic resilience.

2. Community and School Engagement:

  • Schools and local institutions participated in workshops and seminars to learn about the importance of biodiversity and climate resilience.
  • Community members were engaged in discussions about sustainable practices, including reforestation, soil conservation, and water resource management.

3. Launch of the Mt. Elgon Project:

  • Focused on promoting sustainable agricultural practices and supporting Robusta coffee production in the Mt. Elgon region.
  • The project aims to enhance food security, promote soil health, and reduce the reliance on unsustainable farming practices that harm biodiversity.
